Alongside our beginner ESOL readers, we’re building a growing library of free YouTube videos designed specifically for adult beginner English learners.
Our videos use images, drawings, repetition, context and carefully graded language to help learners listen and understand at the same time.
We create videos around everyday ESOL topics, such as daily routines, personal information and life in the UK, as well as simple and engaging stories. Some videos also connect with our readers, giving learners another way to meet and revisit familiar language.
All of our videos are completely free to watch.
The approach behind our videos is known as Comprehensible Input.
The principle is simple: learners acquire language most effectively when they are exposed to language that they can understand.
Rather than translating every word or explaining every grammar point, we make meaning clear through pictures, drawings, gestures, repetition, familiar situations and carefully graded language.
This allows learners to focus on understanding the message while gradually becoming familiar with English vocabulary, expressions and common language patterns.
To give you a better idea of this approach, here is a short example in German. Even if you know very little German, you should still be able to follow the story because the meaning is made clear through context and visual support.
Think of our videos a little like graded readers but for listening.
Just as graded readers give learners access to written language at a level they can understand, our videos aim to give beginners access to spoken English they can follow and enjoy.
Beginner learners can often find themselves listening to English that is simply too difficult. We want to give them access to material they can genuinely understand, allowing them to build up meaningful exposure to spoken English over time.
By watching regularly, learners hear familiar vocabulary and language patterns used again and again in different contexts.
The videos can be used in the classroom or independently at home, giving learners more opportunities to listen to understandable English beyond their regular lessons.
Our long-term aim is to build a substantial library of free, beginner-friendly listening content that learners can return to regularly as their English develops.
We’ve created a free printable flyer with a QR code linking directly to our YouTube channel.
You can print the flyer for your classroom, put it on a noticeboard or simply display it on screen during a lesson. Learners just need to scan the QR code with their phone to find the channel and start watching: click here to open flyer
