Omar is a Teacher is a beginner ESOL reader for adult learners. The story follows Omar, an ESOL teacher from Somalia who lives in Cardiff and teaches students from many different countries. Through simple, everyday situations, readers are introduced to vocabulary related to the classroom, learning English and everyday teaching.
Designed for pre-entry and beginner ESOL learners, the book uses short sentences, repetition and supportive illustrations to help develop reading confidence and understanding. It is particularly suitable for learners who are developing literacy alongside English or who are becoming familiar with the Latin alphabet.
The story provides opportunities to explore practical language that learners may encounter in ESOL classes, including vocabulary related to teachers, students, reading, writing, homework, tests and classroom instructions. It can be used in community ESOL classes, volunteer-led learning, one-to-one support sessions, libraries and refugee support organisations.
The reader includes a range of follow-up activities designed to reinforce vocabulary, reading skills and basic literacy development. Activities can be completed independently, used as homework or incorporated into ESOL lessons.
