Fatima Needs an Appointment is an ESOL literacy reader for adult beginner learners. The story follows Fatima as she contacts her GP surgery and makes a doctor's appointment, using simple, everyday English based on a real-life situation that many learners may encounter.
Designed for pre-entry and beginner ESOL learners, the book uses short sentences, repetition and supportive illustrations to help develop reading confidence. It is particularly suitable for learners who are developing literacy alongside English or who are becoming familiar with the Latin alphabet.
The story can be used in community ESOL classes, volunteer-led learning, one-to-one support sessions, libraries and refugee support organisations. It provides opportunities to explore vocabulary related to healthcare, appointments, personal information and communicating with medical services.
Each reader includes a range of follow-up activities to reinforce vocabulary, reading skills and basic literacy. Activities can be completed independently or used as part of a tutor-led session.
